“Hey, Mia Hamm,’’ a deep rumbling voice called from above me.
I turned in the direction of the voice. The handsome man I saw yesterday playing football with his son was calling to me from the second-floor balcony.
“Who?”
“Mia Hamm. The famous soccer player.”
“I know who Mia Hamm is. I’m not her, and you’re in Barbados where we call it football.”
“Well, I don’t know your name. Why don’t you tell me what it is so I know what to call you and then you can tell me where you learned to play football like that.”
“I think you’ll find that most people who grew up in the Caribbean can pass a football with some skill. I’m not special.”
“I don’t know if I agree with that.” He grinned, and I felt myself flush. “And you still haven’t told me your name.”
“Where are your wife and son?” I asked, deciding to nip this little game in the bud.
His brow furrowed in confusion before realization hit.
“What? No. She is not my wife and Philip is not my son.”
Something that felt suspiciously like hope caused my heart to flutter at his words, but he was probably lying.
“That little boy looked exactly like you.”
“Hey, I’m not saying he’s not a good looking kid.” His grin returned, and so did my flush. “He’s just not my kid.”
“Well, his mother seemed interested. Why don’t talk to her about soccer?”
“I’m not interested in his mother.” He gave me a pointed look, his grin still firmly in place.
My stupid heart fluttered again.
“I’m already taken,” he said.
The fluttering stopped.
“But the problem is, she won’t tell me her name.” He tucked his bottom lip between his teeth, still grinning.
And the fluttering returned. A deep breath helped me calm myself and regain focus before I pressed the elevator button again, knowing that it would do nothing to make the elevator come faster.
I glared at him and rolled my eyes. He was leaning over his balcony waiting for an answer.
“No,” I said finally.
“No, what?” he asked.
“Whatever you want. Whatever you think this is. The answer is no.”
“It can be whatever you want it to be.” That line would’ve been incredibly sleazy from anyone else, but he made it sound so sincere and almost convincing that it was clear I needed to keep my distance from him, no matter how charming he was and no matter how long it had been since I felt a man’s hands on my body.
“Good,” I said. Mercifully, the elevator arrived at that moment, and I stepped inside. “Nothing it is.”

One hiccup. Two hiccups. A sniff.

With my ear pressed against her door, I can hear every sound, every breath.

I can’t stop biting my lip as I listen, wondering what she’s doing right now. Something muffles her cries, a pillow perhaps. I imagine her hugging it tight as she curls up on my guest bed … her bed. In her room. The room I gave her as a prison to stay in.

I shouldn’t be here.

But I can’t stay away either. Wherever she is, I’ve always wanted to follow. It’s what drove me to her in the first place, what made me take her away from her father.

She’s right. I’m a cruel monster who only cares about his own desires. But a part of me, somewhere deep inside, wishes for something else too. Something … better. Something real.

But we can’t have that. We never could and never will.

Not when she’s my hostage, someone I keep in a soft and velvety cage for my selfish needs.

My hand lingers on the wood, nails digging in as my heart sinks into my shoes. I’m fighting the urge to unlock the door and go inside.

I have no place in her room. Not after taunting her to the brink of despair. Did I go too far? The knife and fork were only a game—a way to toy with her emotions—but the sight of her obeying me filled me with such power that it consumed me and made me lash out. I wanted her to eat that cake until she was full and then sink to her knees and take my cock as a second dessert.

But that was a filthy dream of mine. Nothing more.

I should’ve known my fantasies would interfere with my ability to reason. I couldn’t keep my cool and made her face the rage inside me. Of course, she’s upset.

I close my eyes and let out a sigh. I don’t want to be this mean. I want to make her happy.

But I want her to suffer too, and those wishes clash like hell. I want her to know what it did to me when she chose to deny me and chose her goddamn father over me. That fucking arrogant son of a bitch who didn’t even love her … who ruined her for me.

Who worked my father to death … literally.

Taking in a deep breath, I lean away from the door and stare at it for a few seconds. Then I turn around and walk away. But there will come a time when I won’t be able to keep that door locked. When I won’t stop myself from touching her … from kissing her. And that day will be here sooner than she thinks.

EXCERPT

It was a place created for a hunter. Big, sprawling and dirty—victims roaming the streets unaware of their status as prey. They all felt they were safe from the monsters because they were all easily spotted, but they knew nothing about my kind. We were just an abstract concept on some true crime show they watched in the middle of the night—evil reduced to caricature. My reputation was above reproach, but I was the most prolific killer of my kind.
In moments of respite where I hid away in my cabin, I’d analyzed when I'd become broken. I believed my sociopathy was a result of conception. Maybe something as damaged as I shouldn't have survived to birth. A shell without a soul. I'd attempted suicide a time or two, and I bore the marks from years of self-harm. I'd hoped to feel something—pain proved you were alive—and yet the more I cut and burned, it became nothing more than a minor inconvenience—wounds to heal.

I closed my eyes, drew oxygen in through my nose and pushed it slowly past my lips, repeated until I opened my eyes. As with any normal person ending work, I gathered up files and my laptop, stowing them inside my satchel briefcase. Everything in my life was routine and repetition, nothing deviated. I arrived at my office at six in the morning and promptly left at six at night. Meetings were scheduled as needed. I appeared in court. I was successful at my chosen cover, but as with all aspects of my existence, they were disguises.

Josie listened to the farm stand cashier explain.
“Clint, went into baseball and then, all of his grandsons went into baseball and the granddaughter… well, she left Last Stand long ago. Cal’s been in the majors the longest, and I like, never see him around here even though I’ve worked here since last fall.”
So Cal had been keeping secrets from her—of sorts. Or had he assumed she knew about his family full of athletes? His job explained the expensive car and clothes, the body toned like a machine, maybe even the wariness that dogged him. She imagined pro players were hounded by hangers-on who wanted to be a part of their world for selfish reasons.
But not her. She’d prefer to put ten paces between herself and anyone who was remotely famous. She needed to avoid the spotlight at all costs until the trouble at home died down.
The phone vibrated three more times and the girl burst into laughter. “Sorry!” she apologized to Josie. “I knew Darlene would go nuts when she heard.” She picked up the phone and flipped it over, eyes scanning fast. “She wants a picture? Oh God, how can I get a picture?”
Josie figured she’d lost her audience, but since the coast was clear, she couldn’t resist asking one more question.
“You said he got cut this season?” she asked, wanting to be sure she’d understood. “As in, lost his spot on the team?”
The clerk nodded. “It was so awful--”
“Josie, let’s go.” Cal’s voice startled them both as he came through a back door on the opposite end of the store.
She scrambled back from the counter while the teen dropped her phone. Josie hurried past the blueberries and melons to the archway where Cal now stood, his expression stony.
Had he overheard her question? Guilt swamped her even as she kicked herself for not being more careful.
“Ready,” she announced brightly, peering past him into the greenhouse that connected the barn to the farm stand.
“Are you certain?” His voice was low, just for her ears, before he took her hand and tugged her into the greenhouse behind him.
A fan whirred overhead, conditioning the air that smelled like potting soil and growing things. He tipped a metal door closed behind them. A door that closed silently and reminded her how thoroughly he’d startled her when he re-entered the store.
“Absolutely.” She wanted to say it with conviction. To move on and see the bee hives. But her heart was beating too fast with him holding her hand.
And standing too close to her.
His green eyes probed hers, his nearness making her recall his very intriguing male physique. Was it really her fault to feel a flare of feminine interest when he was a professional athlete and had the body that went with it?
“Make sure you know what you’re in for, Josie, before you say yes.” His voice lacked the geniality that she’d heard him use with the young baseball fan. It was all gritty edged and hard now.
And did something wicked to her insides. Something she couldn’t allow herself to feel so soon after another man had deceived her.
Nerves made her blurt the first thing that came to mind.
“I signed on for bee hives.” She’d been very clear about that from the outset, hadn’t she?

Cal released her hand, but he didn’t back away. “Except now you’ve broken our truce by asking questions. So in return, I’ve got a few questions of my own.”

Chapter 1

Looking over her shoulder, Sophie exited the little gas station just outside of Riverton, California through the back of the store and opened the package that held a burner phone. Pulling Gaige Vicker's phone number from her front jean pocket, written on a crumpled piece of a discarded newspaper she'd dug out of the dumpster at her apartment complex, she quickly tapped the numbers into the phone. She regretted having to dismantle and toss her brand new cell phone, but she knew they'd be able to track her with it and she just couldn't take the chance.

Throwing Gaige's number into a nearby garbage can so no one would connect them should she be captured, she quickly made her way across the quiet street and ducked between a large boxwood hedge and a wooden fence. Pressing her back to the warm wood, her eyes ever vigilant to her surroundings, she remained wary. Her heart was still pounding hard from her run through the woods. That bastard who was chasing her told her not to talk to another person about what she knew, her time was up. Swallowing the bile that threatened to rise at the thought of how close she'd come to dying today, she inhaled slowly. By the third ring her heart began racing. "Come on, pick up," She mumbled into the phone.

"Vickers." Her hand flew to cover her mouth as a sob almost escaped. Ducking down further behind the hedge, she whispered, "Gaige? Oh, Gaige, it's Sophie. I'm in trouble and you're the only one who can help me."

Taking a deep breath to regain her composure, she held her breath as she waited for him to respond. "Sophie Turner?"

"Yes." She hated that she sounded so desperate, but she was. Glancing around to make sure no one was nearby, she swallowed before continuing. "Gaige, I'm in trouble. I need help. I'm all alone."

"What about your friend, Kate?" Closing her eyes to stay the tears that threatened to spill, she took another deep breath. "Kate's dead. I'm in trouble. Can you come?"

"Okay, Sophie, tell me what's going on."

"I can't, Gaige, I'm afraid they're following me and I have to make tracks. I'm scared to say too much on the phone. I'm just outside of Riverton. Call me on this burner phone number when you get here. 939-202-9786."

"Sophie, you need to tell me something. What are you up against? What kind of backup do I need?"

"I'm sorry." Fighting a sob, her voice cracked. "Can you come? Can you help me?"

She heard him exhale and knew she was asking a lot of him, but she had nowhere to turn. Whispering, “please,” she heard his voice change.

"I'll be there as soon as I can."

"Thank you." She broke down sobbing, but ended the call, nervous that she'd stayed put too long. Looking all around, she stepped from between the hedge and the fence heading south toward Canyon Creek. She could walk for hours, her Army training had conditioned her for that. Bonus that she wasn't carrying a ruck sack, so she was traveling light. She'd make better time that way.

Attacked from behind, strong arms wrapped themselves around her, she felt herself falling to the ground, face first and tried to twist to land on her attacker. Not quite managing, her right shoulder took the brunt of the fall but not before her attacker managed to reach around and punch her in the jaw once, bringing stars to her eyes. She heard her phone clatter to the ground and her eyes fell on it just in time to see it slide under a nearby trashcan with wheels. Shit.

Fighting passing out, she began kicking back at her attacker and heard him grunt when she managed a good solid kick to his shin. Taking the opportunity, she threw her head back and connected with his nose. Hearing the nasty crunch, she rolled away as he howled, scrambled to her feet, and took off running. The pain slicing through her shoulder hampered her pace, but she was determined to keep going. No way she'd allow them to kill her like they killed Kate. No way in hell. The bastards.

Setting her mind to hear the music she played in her head during their long and arduous runs in the Army, she steadied her pace and refused to look back. Reaching the nearby woods, she ducked in, and carefully watched the terrain as she navigated the downed branches and stumps of trees long ago fallen. Listening for anything behind her, she finally ventured a glance and saw that she wasn't being followed. At least not closely.

Slowing her pace to a fast walk, she looked up through the trees to see where the sun was in the sky. At 2:00 p.m., in California, the sun was just beginning its decent, toward the west, so she adjusted her direction and headed due south. The sun would still shine brightly for another five hours or so. She could realistically travel ten to twelve miles in that time. She'd done it more than once. But, she'd never been more determined than now to make time and distance.

She'd find a place to rest tonight, then she'd find a way to go back in the morning and retrieve her phone. That was the only place she had Gaige's number and it was the only way Gaige had to reach her. Hopefully, her attacker didn't see the phone slide to its landing place. If the grunt she'd heard from him was any indicator, he was in a fair amount of pain right now. But she wasn't going back there to look in case he had help. That would be tomorrow's task.
